Vitamin C for Skin?

100% Yes.
Vitamin C actually occurs naturally in the skin! It helps:
  • stimulate collagen production,
  • protects against damages from UV exposure,
  • minimizes signs of aging (like wrinkles), and
  • helps brighten the skin (to name a few roles)!
(Frontiers in Physiology)
Production declines over time as you age, though, that's why it's added to products as a topical. Dermatologist Vivan Bucay told the DermRF blog that:
"Vitamin C consumption is less effective on skin than topical application....Only 1% of your diet is actually getting into your skin, so putting things on your skin is essential to protect and combat damage. So no matter how much orange juice you consume, only a small fragment is actually being absorbed by skin."

Dr. Bucay's 411 on Vitamin C in the DermRF article goes through everything you need and want to know about Vitamin C, skincare, and skincare products. For example, why is topical best? Can you use it with Retinol? How exactly does it help protect against sun damage?
